Port-au-Prince, June 28 (RHC)-- Thousands of Haitians took to the streets of Port-au-Prince on Sunday to demand that former president Jean Bertrand Aristide be placed at the head of the political transition in the Caribbean country.

The demonstrators carried out the protests from the Carrefour de l'Aeroport square to the residence of former president Aristide, located in Tabarre, while denouncing the inaction of the current government of Ariel Henry.

In this sense, the activists consider that the leader of the Lavalas Party constitutes the best option to get the country out of the severe economic, political and social crisis, at the same time that they qualified the current situation as a "marasmus."

At the same time, Haitians repudiate Henry's chaotic governmental management in the face of the escalation of violence, gang confrontations, inflation, as well as emigration since the last five years.

The protests take place after the current prime minister held a meeting with the former president who is presented as an alternative to the power vacuum caused by the assassination of Jovenel Moise.

Although Hennry affirmed in 2021 that legislative and presidential elections would be held the following year, there is still no precise calendar of elections in the Caribbean nation.

Jean Bertrand Aristide held the presidency in 1991, 1994-1996 and 2001-2004, after being democratically-elected in the elections and then removed from power by continuous military coups.
