Santo Domingo, December 23 (RHC)-- The Dominican Republic's foreign minister said that sending a multinational military force to Haiti is "the only viable path."  Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez called on the United Nations Security Council for a foreign military intervention as a solution to the crisis in Haiti.

The Dominican official affirmed that the international community must act immediately while emphasizing that the deployment of a multinational military force in Haiti is crucial.  Alvarez expressed that "in our opinion, the threshold of good intentions has already been crossed; the Security Council is obliged to concretize as soon as possible the proposal to integrate a multinational force, in support of the Haitian National Police."

At the same time, the Dominican Republic's top diplomat pointed out that his country has facilitated the access to fuel to maintain some basic operations in Haiti following the request of the neighboring government, while he specified that between October and December, the purchase of hundreds of gallons of diesel, gasoline and fuel oil was facilitated.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Haiti, Jean Victor Géneus, pointed out that the reasons for which the Haitian Government requested the support of a specialized force to "restore order and impose the rule of law" are still valid.

Similarly, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed stressed during the session that "international support and solidarity are urgently needed.  Now is not the time to turn our backs on Haiti.  It is time to redouble our efforts."

However, although the session did not take a definite decision on the matter, the UN Sanctions Committee for Haiti noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will appoint four experts in armed crisis response in the coming days.
