Migrants arrive in Lampedusa, Italy

Havana, 25 mar (RHC) In the last 24 hours, 2,045 migrants landed on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, setting a record for arrivals at the site and evidencing the worsening of the current crisis, according to a report from the Coast Guard Service.

The statement released on the digital site of the television channel TgCom 24, indicates that the 43 boats, which arrived on Friday at that island with 1,778 people, were later joined by 267 more immigrants.

In the Imbriacola reception center alone, with a capacity for less than 400 people, 1,831 new arrivals are currently overcrowded, a serious saturation already common in the first months of 2023, due to the increase in the migratory flow mainly from the coasts of Libya and Tunisia.


The migration issue was at the center of the agenda that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni brought to the last European Union (EU) summit held on March 23 and 24 in Brussels, Belgium.

At the end of the meeting, Meloni told the media that "it can be said that Italy is very satisfied", since there was "a marked change of pace in the last Council, and now migration continues to be a priority of the EU's objectives".


A recent report from the Italian Ministry of the Interior indicated that "between January 1 and March 11 of this year, 20,017 irregular migrants disembarked in this Italy, the triple of the 6,152 registered in the same period of the previous year."

Given the seriousness of the situation, the Prime Minister stated that her government must "find a way to stop departures, urgently and effectively", since "the arrival figures are impressive and with the hot season the problem can only get worse". (Source: Prensa Latina)
