Argentina reiterates its demand for a peaceful solution to the dispute with the United Kingdom over sovereignty on the Malvinas Islands

Buenos Aires, Apr 8 (RHC) Forty years after the recovery of democracy, Argentina reiterates its demand for a peaceful solution to the dispute with the United Kingdom over sovereignty on the Malvinas Islands, Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero said today.

In statements to the Télam news agency, the foreign minister insisted on the need to return to the negotiating table and reaffirmed his country’s will to recover the territory usurped by British forces in 1833.

We want international law and the resolutions of the United Nations Organization to be complied with. We demand that this anomalous situation of colonialism in the 21st century, be reversed, he asserted.

Likewise, he affirmed that Argentina has the right to preserve its territorial integrity.

On the other hand, he indicated that the current population of the islands is made up mostly of soldiers and is the result of an imposed community, which he criticized in London for trying to impose a narrative related to self-determination.

The United Kingdom tries to pass off an abnormal situation as something natural and it is not. Argentina will continue to claim, he pointed out.

Cafiero pointed out that the Malvinas War (1982) was promoted by the civic-military dictatorship (1976-1983) with its back to the people, but after the end of that regime, this nation continued to demand a peaceful solution to the conflict.

In addition, he stressed the importance of continuing to raise awareness among citizens around the world about Argentina’s rights over that territory, South Georgia, the South Sandwich, and the surrounding maritime spaces. (Source: PL)
