Havana, April 12 (RHC) - The former president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and Minister of University Education of Venezuela, Tibisay Lucena, passed away this Wednesday at the age of 63.
The news of her death was confirmed by the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, who in a message broadcast on Twitter, called her "insigne daughter of Venezuela" and "true militant for life, and fought her last battle without truce". In addition, she extended her condolences to Lucena’s family and friends.
In turn, President Nicolás Maduro regretted her physical departure and stated through the aforementioned social network: "It is with great sadness that we have to say our last goodbye to a woman of great battles, Tibisay Lucena".
The head of state classified her as a "patriot, defender of democracy and education in our country". In a second message, he evoked her as a "woman of great temper who remained loyal to her principles and ideals, always defending the just causes of the People. We Venezuelans will always remember her for her integrity and moral strength".
Lucena was born in Barquisimeto, Lara state, on April 26, 1959 and studied Sociology at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). She was in charge of the CNE for 14 years, in the period 2006-2020.
In September of that year, she was appointed rector of the Experimental University of the Arts (Unearte), a job she carried out until October 2021, when President Nicolás Maduro appointed her Minister for University Education.
