The prosecution denounced 1,390 people as responsible for the coup attempt last January 8 in Brasilia. So far, 550 became defendants since the justice system accepted the denunciation. Among the 253 who are still detained is the former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres.
The general secretary of the Brazilian Lawyers Institute, Jorge Folena, declared that "they are going from being suspects to defendants, that is to say, they will respond to the criminal process from now on and will present their respective defenses."
"Since last April, the heads of the highest Brazilian court have been analyzing the complaints individually in the virtual plenary," he added. Once the complaint is accepted, the defendants begin to answer for crimes of criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and coup d'état.
At the same time of the judicial actions, the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District is also investigating the coup facts and the National Congress approved the installation of a commission of investigators among deputies.
