Spain assumes responsibility for violence against women

Madrid, Jun 23 (RHC) Spain assumed Friday the presidency of the Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women, at a time of high sensitivity to the issue.

The transition occurs just when the issue is gaining prominence in the electoral field towards the elections of July 23, due to the express denialism of the far-right Vox and confusing pronouncements of the conservative Popular Party (PP).

The PP's alliance with Vox to form a government in the Valencia region is the focal point of the controversy, after agreeing with a politician who served a past sentence for domestic violence.

Criticism of the PP for not setting a vertical position on the issue increased and La Sexta television, in its space El Intermedio, launched a harsh editorial by Sandra Sabates to politicians who deny the scourge against women.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, received today in Madrid the presidency of the Ibero-American Initiative to Prevent and Eliminate Violence against Women.

After the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in these areas, Montero stressed that it will serve to promote "scenarios of dialogue and international cooperation" and exchange experiences and good practices".

In turn, Minister of Women of the Dominican Republic, Mayra Jimenez stressed that many of the challenges faced by women know no borders, they respond to patterns of discrimination and exclusion that are replicated around the world.

Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay, and Venezuela are the countries involved in this initiative. (Source: PL)
