Armenia Calls for Urgent Meeting of the UN Security Council

Havana, August 12 (RHC) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia announced on Saturday in Yerevan that the government has requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the situation surrounding the blockade of the Lachin corridor, the only route connecting to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mher Margaryan, in a letter to the President of the Security Council, denounced the shortage of essential items, including food, medicine, and fuel, due to the blockade of the Lachin corridor.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh since the predominantly Armenian-populated territory decided to secede from the then Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan in 1988.

In April of this year, Azerbaijani border guards set up a checkpoint on the road between Lachin and Shusha.

Yerevan protested against the initiative, accusing Baku of implementing an ethnic cleansing policy in Karabakh, and called for the lifting of the "illegitimate blockade" and the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the security zone in the Lachin corridor.

In 2022, Armenia and Azerbaijan began discussing the signing of a future peace agreement with the mediation of Russia, the United States, and the European Union.

In May of this year, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that his country recognizes the sovereignty of Azerbaijan along with the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh in a total area of 86,600 square kilometers.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev commented that his nation and Armenia could sign the peace agreement in the near future if Yerevan does not change its stance. (Source: Prensa Latina)
