UN High Level Segment will seek to keep Agenda 2030 alive

Havana, Sept 14 (RHC) The High Level Week of the UN General Assembly today aims at guaranteeing greater momentum to keep alive the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

With this purpose, the SDG Summit, on the 18th and 19th, aims at sending a strong and much-needed signal to the world so that the global goals represent a source of hope. This was highlighted by the vice secretary general of the organization, Amina J. Mohammed, when recognizing the efforts to achieve a lucid and progressive political declaration prior to the appointment.

Next week, the organization will host, along with the general debate, the SDG and Climate Ambition summits, the Financing for Development Dialogue, along with three key meetings on health. Mohammed emphasized at a press conference that these events seek to send an optimistic message: to ensure greater momentum, strengthened solidarity and a growing movement to keep the promise of the SDGs alive for everyone everywhere.

This SDG action weekend will also provide opportunities, in particular, for SDG pillars to come together and record their contributions and commitments.

On Saturday the activities will focus on the theme of mobilization. In addition, a high-level opening segment will open with a call to civil society, youth and others with an emphasis on solidarity, determination and possibility.

During the day delegations will be able to describe their contributions to the SDG Summit and beyond, including actors from civil society, the private sector, youth, women, scientists and local and regional governments.

Sunday will be dedicated to how the organziation can better support countries to accelerate implementation. The day will begin with an opening plenary session, a panel discussion on the urgency of the moment, the meaning of what is possible and the imperative of collective action.

Participants will transition to events across 12 high-impact initiatives and special sessions on digital, gender and complex environments.

The intention, in Mohammed's view, is to demonstrate that transformative progress is possible and already happening, while generating leadership, support and momentum. (Source: PL)
