Bogota, February 8 (RHC)-- Thousands of people mobilized from the early hours of Thursday in several Colombian cities in support of President Gustavo Petro and in rejection of a plan of institutional rupture led by the Attorney General's Office.

In Bogota, the capital, there are reports of citizens' rallies in front of the Attorney General's Office headquarters. Also in the vicinity of the Supreme Court of Justice and at the headquarters of the National Learning Service (SENA).

As a common denominator, they demand the election of the new Attorney General, especially after it was made public this morning that the Supreme Court of Justice postponed her election for next February 22.  The demonstrators demand an end to corruption within the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Local media reported that from the aforementioned points and other spaces in the capital, such as the National University and the National Park, demonstrators advanced towards Plaza Bolivar, to wait for the beginning of a mass rally scheduled to start at noon.

In addition to demanding that Attorney General Francisco Barbosa terminate his mandate, citizens are also demanding the departure of Deputy Attorney General Martha Mancera. They state that both wish to perpetuate themselves in that instance to cover up corruption and hinder the work of a Government which, for the first time in national history, represents the interests of the dispossessed majorities.

Different political sectors, social, educational and citizens' organizations in support of the Government of Change gathered from early hours in the park of Las Luces, in the city of Medellin (northwest).

Thousands of demonstrators also marched peacefully through the streets of Cali, Nariño, Popayán, Tunja, Pereira, Manizales, Bucaramanga and Cúcuta, among others, to the departmental headquarters of the Attorney General's Office and the Courthouses.

Among those mobilized at the national level were members of the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (Fecode), the Sena, the Teachers and Workers Union (Sindimaestros) and the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), as well as militants and sympathizers of Pacto Histórico and Colombia Humana, students, workers and indigenous and peasant organizations.
