5.2 magnitude earthquake shakes the border of Costa Rica and Panama

Panama City, May 26 (RHC)--   A 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred this Saturday in the border area between Costa Rica and Panama, without reports of victims or significant material damage having been issued so far.

According to the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama, the earthquake was recorded around 3:11 p.m. (local time), at a depth of 5 kilometers.  Experts reported that it occurred about 10 kilometers west of Progreso, an area located in the province of Chiriquí.

For its part, the National Seismological Network (RSN) of Costa Rica specified that the epicenter was located in the Corredores area, in the southern province of Puntarenas. He added that it was felt in towns such as Río Claro de Golfito, Talamanca, Ciudad Neily, Canoas, Ipis and Pérez Zeledón, among others.

Regarding damage caused by the earthquake, Panamanian emergency services did not report any damage or victims, although there were reports of high perceptibility in towns near the border with Costa Rica.

In the latter country, media and social networks showed images of supermarkets in the Corredores area, showing products that fell from the shelves as a result of the earthquake.

According to the media, a series of tremors of magnitude between 3.5 and 5.2 were detected in this area several hours earlier.
