Mexico City, June 28 (RHC)-- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, celebrated the failure of Wednesday's coup attempt in Bolivia, during his usual press conference yesterday.

“Fortunately, the Government of Bolivia, led by Luis Arce, responded very well.  The people of Bolivia responded very well, the people defending democracy, rejecting the military coup,” said the Mexican president.

Lopez Obrador highlighted the role of the Armed Forces, which according to the head of state, the majority did not support the coup, which was crucial to reestablish democracy and legality in the South American country.

The Mexican leader also highlighted the international support that unanimously condemned the destabilization attempt.

However, López Obrador pointed out that this type of event "affects countries greatly because it generates uncertainty and affects the economy of the people."

This Wednesday, the now dismissed military chief, Juan José Zuñiga, led a group of heavily armed soldiers to take over the headquarters of the Bolivian Executive.  Zuñiga and his followers retreated after the change of military command and, moments later, he was captured at the headquarters of the General Staff.

Subsequently, the Attorney General's Office reported that criminal investigations were activated, in addition to an immigration alert against the general.
