Palestinian Medical Aid Society denounces health crisis in Gaza Strip

Havana, July 28 (RHC) The Palestinian Medical Relief Society warned today of the deterioration of health conditions in the Gaza Strip after almost 10 months of Israeli aggression.

In a communiqué, the institution warned of the growing spread of diseases such as polio, due to the lack of personal hygiene caused by the shortage of materials and water in the overcrowded shelters.

This is compounded by the high summer temperatures and the pollution caused by the large amount of garbage and sewage scattered throughout the area.

Faced with this situation, the organization called on the world to intervene immediately to address the crisis by bringing in medicines, fuel, food and cleaning supplies.

The World Health Organization announced last week that it would send more than one million polio vaccines to Gaza after the presence of the polio virus was detected in sewage samples.

Earlier this year, the Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority revealed that 66 percent of the Strip's population suffers from the spread of waterborne diseases, including cholera and chronic diarrhea, due to the destruction of the sector in Israeli attacks.

Numerous NGOs and UN agencies continue to warn of the deteriorating health conditions in the territory, especially in the north, due to sewage overflows and the contamination of drinking water.

A few days ago, the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, Hossam Abu Safiya, accused Israel of spreading infectious diseases by preventing the entry into the territory of vaccines and equipment needed to solve the sewage crisis. (Source: Prensa Latina)
