Mexican Senate confirms former president López Obrador's electricity reform

Mexico City, October 18 (RHC)-- The Mexican Senate decided by majority to endorse the energy reform promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, so it goes to the state congresses for analysis and voting, needing the approval of the absolute majority to reach the federal Executive and enter into force.

The reform proposes returning the public character to entities such as Petróleos Mexicanos and the Federal Electricity Commission, also committing to never again seeing oil, electric energy, lithium and the Internet as objects of speculation and hoarding by private interests.

In this way, private companies will be able to participate in activities in the energy industry, but in no case will they prevail over the state-owned company, which is in charge of the energy transition and will sustainably use all the energy sources available to the nation.

Likewise, the exclusive functions of the State will not constitute monopolies when operating in lithium and the state internet service.  Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Upper House, stated: “It is instructed that it be immediately sent to the Congresses of the federative entities and Mexico City by all possible means, including electronic means.”

After hours of discussion, the political forces Morena, PT and PVEM achieved a qualified majority with 86 votes in favor, since it is a constitutional reform and requires two-thirds of the Senate's plenary. The opposition PAN, PRI and Movimiento Ciudadano gave 39 votes against, since they claim that it does not benefit the people.

Amid Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed more than 42,400 Palestinians so far, as well as the genocide in Lebanon, resistance groups in Palestine and across the region continue their operations against the Tel Aviv regime and its Western backers.
