Buenos Aires, November 15 (RHC)-- The Government of Argentina voted Thursday against the resolution to “Intensify efforts in the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls, especially in the digital environment” at the United Nations (UN).

In the document, nations are responsible for increasing actions to prevent and eliminate all manifestations of violence against women and girls, especially in the digital environment.  The document was submitted to the plenary on Monday at the General Assembly and was approved by 170 countries, 13 abstained while Javier Milei's government opposed it.

The legal framework expressed the need and agenda on “the commitment to eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres”, as well as human trafficking, the role of technology and the digital environment, inequality, among other aspects.

In this sense, the Argentine Government voted against the decision affirmed by some of its allies in the international sphere, including the United States and Israel, who voted in favor of the measure. Russia, Nicaragua, Iran and Senegal abstained.

The resolution highlights the danger of online violence on the web and its disproportionate impact on women and girls, calling on governments to strengthen their legislation and policies to address it. It highlights the work of education and civil society participation in tackling the problem.

Previously, it was the only nation that opposed the recognition of the rights of indigenous communities. With the beginning of Gerardo Werthein's term as head of Argentina's Foreign Ministry, the nation has taken the opposite position to the rest of the world.
