Bogota, November 22 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The Colombian government and FARC rebels could implement a 36-hour cease-fire, a measure that could help in the liberation of General Ruben Dario Alzate and could mean the renewal of peace talks in Havana.

Expectation is mounting as President Juan Manuel Santos announced Thursday that the operation for the liberation of General Ruben Dario Alzate, captured by the FARC, was already underway.

The 36-hour cease-fire has not been confirmed, but officials say negotiations with the guerrilla group are still taking place.

Several organizations are urging both the government and the rebels to implement a bilateral cease-fire once both parties return to the peace talks in Havana.

Meanwhile, Colombian congressional representatives are drafting a bill to call Alzate, once liberated, to testify and explain some of the circumstances leading to his capture.

The Colombian general was dressed as a civilian in a known “red zone,” or war zone, and local witnesses say he was captured without the use of force.
