Panama City, November 24 (NNN-RHC)-- Some 2,000 Panamanians marched against corruption in the country on Sunday, with many charging a former president’s administration of permitting “illegal enrichment.”
The demonstrators, dressed in white and holding the country's flag, cited recent corruption scandals linked to former right-wing president, Ricardo Martinelli. Protesters demanded legal procedures against whoever may have benefited from illegal practices.
The march started in the coastal Avenue Cinta Costera in the capital, before ending at the General Treasury of the Republic.
“In Panama there is outrage, indignation and rejection of the corrupted,” said Alfredo Motta from Independent Movement, one of the dozens of organizations that called the protest.
Martinelli, who himself has been accused of taking bribes from an aide to former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, lost his presidential immunity but has attempted to recover it by affiliating himself to the Central American Parliament as a legislator due to his former position as president.
