Port-au-Prince, January 25 (RHC)-- In Haiti, Jovenel Moise, presidential candidate for the ruling Farmers' Response Party has called for a new date for the country's run-off elections.

Thousands of people participated in street demonstrations across the country over the weekend, demanding that President Michel Martelly and his transition government step down.

Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced on Friday that it had ordered the postponement of the run-off elections, once again, alleging lack of a safe environment.

This was the second time that the CEP had postponed the second round of presidential elections, which were originally scheduled for December 27th, but were postponed amid fraud allegations.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-mun has expressed deep concern over this latest development and urged a consensus among political actors so that the Haitian people can exercise their right to elect a new president.
