Buenos Aires, March 24 (RHC)-- On Thursday, human rights organizations, social movements and labor groups took to the streets across Argentina to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1976 coup that marked the beginning of the dictatorship, which lasted until 1983.

March 24th is a holiday in Argentina --the "Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice."

Protesters participated in acts of civil disobedience to commemorate the victims of the dictatorship and Dirty War, backed by the United States, which left up to 30,000 killed or forcibly disappeared in the South American country.

Around 500,000 protesters paid tribute to the victims and reiterated their condemnation of the actions carried out under the U.S.-backed military dictatorship.
