Washington, September 14 (RHC)-- U.S. President Barack Obama extended Tuesday for one year a federal law that restricts trade with Cuba.
The restrictions, introduced under the Trading with the Enemy Act, will remain in effect until September 14, 2017, according to a memorandum issued by the U.S. president.
Obama had until Wednesday, September 14th, to decide whether to extend the trade restrictions against Cuba, first imposed in 1962 by then U.S. President John Kennedy as part of Washington's blockade policy against Cuba. Ever since, the trade restrictions have been extended year after year by the nine consecutive U.S. administrations.
