Havana, March 23 (RHC-ACN)-- Cuban and US scientists held a joint workshop in Havana to study the frequency and intensity of hurricanes that have hit the Caribbean state over the past years. The aim of the study was to exchange and expand their knowledge on those natural phenomena.

The project is part of the National Climate Change Program and includes the participation of experts from the US Universities of Auburn and Alabama.

Project Director, Cuban researcher Jesus Pajón, said it focuses on analyzing the imprint left by the hurricanes on stalagmites in caves located in western Cuba.

The Cuban expert said results of the study will be significant to evaluate possible return or recurrence cycles, particularly in the cases of noticeable strong hurricanes.
