Havana, April 26 (RHC-PL)-- Cuba will mark two decades of the Chemical Weapons Convention with a Day for the Protection against these deadly devices, and a commemorative event for the 20th anniversary of that international agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
The program of activities includes meetings and seminars, organized by the national authority in charge of the implementation of the Convention, in coordination with other Cuban institutions.
Cuba was one of the signatories to the international instrument, which it ratified upon the Convention's entry into force on April 29th, 1997. The Caribbean state has repeatedly expressed its commitment to the Convention's full, effective and non-discriminatory application.
The release by the Cuban foreign ministry states that 'the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons (Chemical Weapons Convention) corresponds to the firm and consistent Cuban position in favor of the prohibition and total elimination of weapons of mass destruction.'
It also calls for the elimination of unilateral sanctions and restrictions that, in contravention of the Convention, limit and hinder the peaceful exchange of chemical substances, materials and equipment.
