Holguin, October 10 (RHC/acn) -- Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited on Monday the municipality of Gibara, in eastern Holguin province, where he oversaw the recovery work in the area, one of the most hard hit by Hurricane Irma in September.

Adrian Rojas, President of the Municipal Defense Council, said one thousand 196 homes were damaged in the territory, most suffering total or partial loss of their roofs. He said also that waves had eroded some 600 meters of Gibara city’s iconic seaside drive.

The local official in Gibara said recovery in the municipality has extended also to the planting of short-cycle crops.

During his tour of the affected areas, Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel said he had no doubt that the city of Gibara will regain its usual beauty. He congratulated engineers and construction workers for the fine renovation job done on a partial stretch of the sea-side drive, and stressed the need for the recovery work to include a sustainability approach, in order to reduce the risks of future events.
