Mayabeque, March 4 (RHC)-- In an effort to boost preventive actions against the outbreak of diseases with the upcoming rainy season in May, community organizations and the Health Ministry will implement an island-wide campaign to educate people in the application of sanitation and hygienic measures.

The campaign got underway Monday in the Guines municipality, in Mayabeque province, which is one of the provinces reporting the worst sanitation conditions, the Cuban News Agency reported.

According to the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, the CDRs, Carlos Rafael Miranda, the problems that are not eliminated now could worsen with the upcoming spring season as rainfall will be frequent, thus increasing the danger for the appearance of acute diarrhea cases and other vector-carried diseases.

As part of the campaign, health authorities and CDR representatives will visit high-risk areas in some 20 municipalities in the country to educate the people, through debates, chats and other actions in order to raise awareness and involve people in environmental sanitation actions.

CDR members have organized in groups to carry out weekly visits to homes in order to educate the families, detect and destroy any possible nesting sites of disease carriers.

The community organization has over 8 million members, grouped in 135 thousand 647 neighborhood cells throughout the island. As part of its agenda, the CDRs also support all national health programs in Cuba.
