Havana, January 18 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned the decision by the United States government to suspend the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act for only 45 days. “We strongly reject this new interventionist, threatening, arrogant provocation, in violation of international law. The U.S. government demonstrates its contempt for the rest of the world,” the Cuban president tweeted.
He also blasted all forms of political blackmail and actions used by Washington to intensify the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
On January 17, the U.S. State Department announced the suspension for 45 days of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act that came into force in 1996.
This section authorizes U.S. nationals to file lawsuits before U.S. courts against any foreigner who 'trafficks' U.S. property that was nationalized in Cuba in the 1960s.
In response to the announcement, the Cuban Foreign Ministry issued a statement noting that “the government of President Donald Trump threatens to take a new step that would dangerously reinforce the blockade against Cuba, flagrantly violate International Law, and directly attack the sovereignty and interests of third countries.”
