Havana, July 19 (RHC)-- The Government of Cuba has released 2,604 people deprived of liberty in accordance with the postulates of the new Constitution of the Republic which favor the social reinsertion of sanctioned people.

According to an official note released Friday, the pardon took into account the requests of relatives and it was carried out in compliance with policies established by the government of the Caribbean nation several years ago.

The decision on each case was based on merits of good behavior, the prison term served, as well as the characteristics and impact of the crimes commitment, said the note.

Similarly, the age and chronic illnesses suffered by some inmates were analyzed, particularly those of women, young people and elderly people.

According to the release, in all cases those selected have served at least one third of the prison term imposed by the courts.

It also clarifies that the pardon did not include those punished for crimes of murder, rape, pedophilia with violence, homicide, child corruption, theft and illegal slaughter of large livestock, as well as those behaviors related to drugs and fuel theft.

The note added that neither were included those condemned for robbery with violence or intimidation of persons, acts of corruption, reoffenders, and inmates who had previously been pardoned and subsequently re-entered prison for committing new crimes.
