Abuja, October 8 (RHC)-- The Nigerian Labor Congress has sent a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee calling for the award of the 2021 Prize to the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade.

In a letter supporting its request, the umbrella organization for trade unions in the African country highlights the relevant results obtained by the Brigade of Cuban medical personnel, specialized in response to disasters and humanitarian distress events.

The document also describes the Brigade's presence in combating Ebola in Africa and Cholera in Haiti and its most recent participation in the fight against COVID-19.

The Nigerian Labor Congress recalled that when the COVID-19 was declared a pandemic and became the greatest health threat the world has faced in the 21st century, the Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade prepared to help any nation that would request its assistance. 

Forty-five brigades were created to fight the pandemic, 38 still serving in 29 nations, the letter added.

In 15 years, the Brigade has been part of the international efforts to increase cooperation between nations in the health care sector. It has dispatched 71 medical contingents to all corners of the world.

The letter of the Nigerian Labor Congress is signed by its President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who is also the current President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the world's largest trade union federation with headquarters in Brussels.
