Havana, February  3 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Wednesday noted the relevance of the extension of the Strategic Arms Reduction and Limitation Treaty (START III), an agreement between Russia and the United States, whose presidents recently renewed.

The START III Treaty's extension is an important contribution to the world peace we so badly need, Díaz-Canel tweeted.

START III, which limits Russian and U.S. arsenals to a maximum of 700 deployed missiles, 1,550 nuclear warheads, and 800 vehicles, was signed in 2010.

In anticipation of the February 5, 2021 deadline, the Eurasian nation's president, Vladimir Putin, and the new U.S. president, Joe Biden, agreed on January 26 to extend the treaty, according to Sputnik, a Russian news media.

The day before, Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, had stressed the importance of extending START III, which promotes international security.
