Havana, May 28 (RHC)-- The World Assembly of Delegates of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE)elected Cuba as a member of the Council of this international organization, according to information published by the Ministry of Agriculture on its official website.

Being a member of the highest governing body of the OIE, to which 182 countries belong, means that Cuban animal health authorities participate in the development of international standards and policies on animal health, especially for international trade and the fight against the main animal diseases, as well as in the strategic decisions adopted worldwide on this issue.

With 125 countries exercising their right to vote, in a session reserved exclusively for the delegates of the countries participating in the 88th OIE General Assembly, 120 nations were in favor of Cuba, none against and five abstentions, according to the note.

The fact that Cuba is part of the OIE Council is a fair recognition to the work carried out by the Cuban veterinary services since September 4, 1972, date on which the island joined the organization.
