Havana, June 19 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated on Friday United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres on his re-election to the post for the next five years.

On Twitter, the President wrote: 'We are convinced that he will continue working to strengthen multilateralism and the promotion of international peace and security.

He also pointed out that the Portuguese diplomat will be able to count on the support of the Caribbean nation in this endeavor.

The UN General Assembly confirmed this Friday the renewal of Guterres, who was sworn in for a second term until December 31, 2026.

After serving as prime minister of Portugal (1995-2002) and UN High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), the diplomat took over as secretary-general of the multilateral body in January 2017.
