Havana, June 28 (RHC) -- Cuban health authorities announced on Monday 2 589 new infections of COVID-19 and 12 fatalities, confirming the complex epidemiological situation the island is going through.

The National Director of Epidemiology, Dr. Francisco Duran, said that an overwhelming majority of the cases are autochthonous. In the last four days, the Caribbean nation has reported over 2400.

With the current update, Cuba now accumulates 184 943 people diagnosed with the disease and 1253 deaths.

Reporting the highest6 number of cases were Matanzas with 508, Havana 384, Santiago de Cuba 333,and  Ciego de Ávila with 224.

Unlike other countries, where some people do not want to get vaccinated against Covid-19, Duran explained that Cubans are participating enthusiastically in the current health intervention underway with  Sobernana 02 and Abdala vaccine candidates.

As of June 26, 961 917 Cubans are fully vaccinated, and  5 591 222 doses have been administered island-wide.

Despite the complicated situation the country currently experiences, Dr. Duran expressed optimism and said that things would improve as the health intervention advances.

In the meantime, he urged Cubans to abide by social distancing strictly and wearing masks outdoor to avoid the contagion with the strains circulating in the national territory.
