Havana, Oct 1st (RHC) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the director of the Research Center of the 'Pedro Kouri' Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), María Guadalupe Guzmán Tirado, with the L'Oréal-UNESCO International Prize, Women and Science.

Unesco wrote on its website  :"Guzman Tirado is rewarded for her pioneering work, which has led to a better understanding and treatment of dengue or tropical influenza, a disease that mainly affects intertropical areas and infects between 50 and 100 million people worldwide each year."

The international organization notes that the L'Oréal Foundation and Unesco are recognizing five eminent women scientists with exceptional careers from the five regions of the world. This is the 24th edition of the international prize, and this time it is awarded in the category of life and environmental sciences. "Recent years have shown more than ever the importance of science in responding to the great challenges the world must face and, to be effective, science must rely on all talents," wrote Unesco.
