Edemis Tamayo

Havana, January 3 (RHC)-- Army General Raúl Castro and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent floral offerings to the funeral of combatant Edemis Tamayo on Monday.

According to La Demajagua newspaper, the well-known member of the all-female members of Las Marianas platoon, created in 1958 in the Sierra Maestra by the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, died Sunday.

According to the newspaper, Tamayo joined the revolutionary struggle and the Rebel Army at the age of 15 to confront the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista that ruled Cuba from 1952 through December 31, 1958.

She participated as a messenger and in armed confrontations. After the triumph in 1959, she held positions in various ministries, contributed to the inauguration of rural hospitals, and intervened in founding the people's power, among other tasks.

She was part of the provincial secretariat of the Federation of Cuban Women in Granma province and the leadership in that territory of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution.

The Mariana Grajales platoon, known as Las Marianas, was created in La Plata on September 4, 1958, and was made up of women, an initiative in which the outstanding Cuban combatant Celia Sánchez also participated.
