Havana, May 14 (RHC)-- Deputies to Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power (parliament) approved on Saturday the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security as part of its fifth extraordinary session in the ninth legislature.

The Law is the first in the Caribbean nation's legal system on this issue, and it will allow perfecting the processes of production, transformation, marketing, and consumption of food based on the endogenous capacities of each territory.

The Law is of utmost importance for the country, deputies acknowledged, because it refers to a core issue such as food, and pointed out its correspondence with the provisions of the current Constitution, which establishes the right of all persons to healthy and adequate nutrition.

During the presentation of the project, the Minister of Agriculture Ydael Pérez highlighted the high participation in the drafting of the legislation.

The text regulates the organization of local food systems so that they can be sovereign and sustainable.

It also establishes the creation, composition, and functions of the commissions dedicated to food sovereignty at the national, provincial, and municipal levels, in addition to the responsibilities of the agencies of the central administration of the State and the local bodies of the People's Power for the proper functioning of territorial food systems.

At the same time, it provides for broad participation of science and innovation in these processes.

A total of 282 proposals were received, of which 146 were accepted and 59 were accepted in part, which implied the complete modification of article 44.
