Havana, October 18 (Web Network)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel presided over the ceremony for the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our country and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The activity took place at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana, according to a tweet from the Presidency.

Díaz-Canel sent, the day before, a message to his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the occasion of the important date.

"Cordial congratulations on behalf of the Cuban people and government to the Algerian people and government," wrote the head of state, who also reaffirmed the will to expand the historic relations of friendship, cooperation and solidarity between our nations.

For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also congratulated his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra.

On October 17, 1962, the then Prime Minister of Algeria, Ahmed Ben Bella, signed a joint declaration with his Cuban counterpart Fidel Castro Ruz, formally establishing bilateral relations.

Both nations have maintained close ties since the independence of that African country in 1962, and their collaboration covers the sectors of health, energy, construction, education, culture and sports, among others.

Since May 23, 1963, when the first Internationalist Medical Brigade arrived in Algeria, thousands of Cuban professionals have served in the nation.
