Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister

Havana, Dec 1 (RHC) Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio on Thursday rejected the U.S. Justice Department's refusal to install a submarine telecommunications cable that would connect the two nations.

On his Twitter account, the diplomat questioned whether this is the way the U.S. government is supposed to comply with its stated commitment to promote the use of the Internet in Cuba.

He noted that with this refusal " Washington expresses its declared concern for the welfare of the Cuban people, whom it punishes mercilessly with the economic blockade."

The U.S. Department of Justice recommended to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny a permit to install the first submarine telecommunications cable that would connect both countries, for homeland security reasons.

The Justice Department's decision uses as a pretext that Cuba's relations with other "foreign adversaries" such as China and Russia represent a risk for the U.S. government if such a connection were to exist. (Source: PL)

Meanwhile, the US military base remains firmly in place on the Cuban territory of Guantanamo Bay. The US government wants to prevent any neighborly interactions between Cuban and US citizens.
