The student and communist leader Julio Antonio Mella was assassinated in Mexico 94 years ago by henchmen of dictator Gerardo Machado (1925-1933).

Havana, Jan 10 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Tuesday remember student and communist leader Julio Antonio Mella, who was assassinated in Mexico 94 years ago by henchmen of dictator Gerardo Machado (1925-1933).

In his Twitter profile, the Cuban president recalled Mella's last words when he was shot at the age of 25: "I die for the Revolution".

Likewise, he highlighted the political leadership of the Cuban revolutionary, recognized today as a guide of organizations such as the University Student Federation (FEU) and the Young Communist Union. Julio Antonio Mella lives in the Cuban youth and student body, said the head of state.

Mella was co-founder of the Communist Party of Cuba and the FEU, among numerous organizations, and developed in his short existence a feverish political and revolutionary activity that turned him into a leader of international stature.

On January 10, 1929, at night, after leaving the offices of Socorro Rojo in Mexico City, when he was two blocks away from his home, Julio Antonio Mella was shot several times. He died a few hours later.

His ashes were taken to Cuba on September 29, 1933, and since 1976 they remain in the Julio Antonio Mella Memorial, in front of the steps of the University of Havana.
