Parliamentary Commissions report to the Council of State

Havana, Jan 20 (RHC) Cuba's parliamentary commissions have carried out difficult work over the past five years, according to a meeting of the Council of State headed by the president of that body, Esteban Lazo.

As reported by the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), between 2018 and 2023, the members of these groups followed up on issues related to the national economy, the development of the constitutional reform process and carried out an intense legislative activity after the proclamation of the Magna Carta on April 10, 2019.

The Covid-19 outbreak also demanded the deputies’ active participation in tasks of prevention and confrontation of the pandemic.

At the meeting, held the day before, the members of the Council of State acknowledged how the permanent working commissions adapted their objectives and actions.

In that direction, they reinforced the actions in the territories, with more meetings with the population, the review of policies and programs prioritized by the country, and the actions of participation and popular control.

As a distinctive element in the last years of the IX Legislature, the development of accounting processes and greater oversight of agencies of the Central State Administration and provincial governments was highlighted, with favorable results and experiences to improve these mechanisms.

The members of this body also examined how the commissions established a closer working relationship with the Council of State, checked the implementation of the agreements and recommendations contained in the opinions of the National Assembly, and monitored the decrees and laws passed.

They also agreed on the need to better inform the population about the work of the Parliament, both through social communication and more direct contact of the deputies with their constituents in their territories.

Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly of People's Power, stressed the importance of this exercise, to enhance work.

Meanwhile, Homero Acosta, secretary of the Parliament, presented the proposals for adjustments to the plan of issues of the Council of State for the next two months and the call for the extraordinary session of the municipal assemblies for the nomination of candidates for deputies to the National Assembly of People's Power on February 5.
