Cuba recalls the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.

Havana, Jan 29 (RHC) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez today recalled the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a peace zone, a transcendental agreement assumed nine years ago by the region's leaders.

In his Twitter account, Rodriguez brought up the thoughts of José Martí, after celebrating the day before the 170th anniversary of his birth: "The Americas must promote everything that brings peoples closer together, and abhor everything that separates them. In this, as in all human problems, the future is peace".

Rodriguez recalled the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace during the celebration of the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Havana on January 29, 2014. The 33 member countries of the organization renounced the use of force to resolve disputes with their neighbors.

    "I solemnly proclaim Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace", said the then-Cuban president, Raúl Castro, before 30 heads of state of the countries of the bloc in what constitutes one of the most symbolic agreements adopted by that integration mechanism.

CELAC was constituted on February 23, 2010, by 33 Latin American and Caribbean states under the principles of dialogue and political agreement, and as an articulating mechanism to work at all times based on consensus and to defend peace (Source: Prensa Latina).
