Minister of Public Health Jose Angel Portal

Havana, March 12 (RHC) Minister of Public Health Jose Angel Portal on Saturday extolled the Cuban people's worth during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The confirmation of the first positive patient with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Cuba on March 11, 2020, marked a before and after for the country’s healthcare system.

“Doctors, scientists, teachers, nursing staff, drivers, technicians, computer experts, students… the whole people… became protagonists of heroism,” the minister stressed in a press release on the MINSAP’s website.

There are thousands of stories of dedication, humility, respect, and sensitivity written in the country during the last three years, also marked by resistance and constant growth, Portal pointed out.

The way we have worked since then allows us to ensure today that Cuba has the epidemic under control.

The road traveled was complex, but with great strengths: the first of them, is the irrevocable political will of our government to put people’s health first always.

Caring for the people’s health is not a luxury, it is a conquest won for all by the Cuban Revolution, Portal stated.

He lamented that thousands of people died in these years in the world without even having the right to medical care.

The minister explained that since August 20, 2022, no one has died in Cuba as a result of the virus, it is a fact of hope and shows how much work has been done from multiple scenarios to counteract the effects of the disease.

He stressed that the Covid-19 vaccination campaign, launched in late 2021 nationwide, is a strength that distinguishes us from other nations.

Favorable statistics make us proud and save us, but they cannot become a pretext for acting irresponsibly, since Covid-19 has not disappeared and we must learn to live with it.

Portal denounced the tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, which prevents Cuba from acquiring medicines, equipment, and supplies that are essential to provide services to the people. (Source: Prensa Latina).
