Tidal station in Cuba will reinforce warning system

Havana, March 29 (RHC) The automatic tide station in operation in Cayo Coco, north of the central Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila, is today of great benefit to reinforce the early warning system in the event of hydrometeorological phenomena.

Included in the international Coastal Resilience project being developed on the north-central coast of the country, the team will provide data on the movement of the sea and the behavior of temperature, as informed by the coordinator of the program in Ciego de Ávila, María del Carmen Olivera.

She specified that it will also facilitate studies and forecasts on the extreme weather events themselves and other effects caused by climate change.

According to Olivera, the device will offer real-time information on the rise in sea level, which can increase knowledge when forecasting dynamic coastal processes, geodetic and environmental applications, the occurrence of tsunamis and volcanic activity. It will also provide security for navigation in the area, mainly for the operations of ships in the port of Casasa, located in Cayo Coco.

The national tidal network is made up of equipment located in different coastal points of the country, including another automated one recently placed in Playa Vitoria, north of the province of Sancti Spíritus. (Source: Prensa Latina)
