Death of Martí

Havana, May 19 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today highlighted through his Twitter account the validity of the work of National Hero José Martí, on the 128th anniversary of his fall in combat against Spanish forces.

"When he fell in Dos Ríos, José Martí was only 42 years old, but he left a political, literary and educational work for all times," the president said on the social network.

José Martí died on the morning of May 19, 1895, in Dos Ríos, during the so-called Necessary War (1895-1898), organized by him as the leading figure of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, which he also founded with the purpose of achieving independence from Spain.

Also known as the Apostle of Independence, he was hit by three shots during a combat between the forces led by General Máximo Gómez and a Spanish column.

Martí's corpse was recognized and picked up by the enemy, who retreated under constant attacks by Cubans determined to recover it, and gave him burial in the nearby town of Remanganaguas.

The mortal remains were finally buried in the necropolis of Santa Ifigenia, in Santiago de Cuba, in the eastern part of the country. (Source:PL)
