Cuba will contribute to training coaches and athletes in Cambodia

Havana, May 19 (RHC) Sports cooperation between Cuba and Cambodia was reinforced today with the signing of an agreement, by virtue of which Cuba will contribute to training sports coaches and athletes in Phnom Penh.

For this purpose, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Manuel Fajardo University of Sciences of Physical Culture and Sport and the National Institute for Training Teachers of Sport and Physical Education of Cambodia. The document was signed by Silvano Merced, rector of the Cuban institution, and Hou Sithisophealai, rector of the Cambodian institution.

The event was headed by Ouk Sethycheat, Director General of Sports of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports; and Liurka Rodríguez, Cuban Ambassador to Cambodia, who also participated in a tour of the facilities of the training center for Cambodian athletes.

The occasion was also propitious to hold an exchange on Cuba's experiences in this area, with emphasis on the application of science in sports academic improvement.

During the meeting, cooperation in the field of sports was recognized as an essential pillar of the ties between Cuba and Cambodia, and in particular Ouk Sethycheat praised the work of Cuban volleyball coach Berto Friol.

Sethycheat  remarked that the silver medal obtained by the Cambodian men's volleyball team in the recently completed 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games constitutes the best historical performance of that discipline and an evident expression of Cuba's valuable contribution to the development of the sport in the Kingdom.
