Cuban president ratifies commitment to UN Human Rights mechanisms

Havana, July 18 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel ratified Tuesday in Brussels, his country's willingness to continue strengthening cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights mechanisms.

In his Twitter profile, the president said that in a meeting in the Belgian capital with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, he expressed such willingness, on the basis of respectful and constructive dialogue.

As part of his work agenda in the context of the III Celac-European Union Summit, Díaz-Canel also met this day in the Belgian capital with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

On that occasion, they confirmed their shared will to deepen political dialogue and their interest in strengthening and expanding economic, trade and cooperation ties for the benefit of both nations.

The Cuban head of state also spoke with Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena.

Cuba advocated at the Summit for establishing better, fairer, more balanced, supportive and cooperative relations to improve the lives of the peoples.

Speaking at the intercontinental forum the day before, the Cuban head of state called for boosting cooperation in sectors such as development financing, technology transfers, renewable energies, digital transformation, scientific research and innovation, trade and investment.

He also expressed gratitude for the solid position of Latin America and the Caribbean and the EU in rejecting the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Antillean nation for more than 60 years.

He highlighted the rejection of the inclusion of Cuba in the list drawn up by Washington of the countries it considers sponsors of terrorism, a mechanism he described as fraudulent and unilateral, lacking international recognition and support.
