Commander Camilo CIenfuegos is also known as the Hero of Yaguajay

Havana, Oct 28 (RHC) Cuba today remembers the Commander of the Rebel Army Camilo Cienfuegos, known in the country as the Hero of Yaguajay, 64 years after his death.

As a prelude to the anniversary, the day before thousands of people paid tribute to Cienfuegos in Havana. From the José Martí Plaza de la Revolución a pilgrimage began towards the capital's coast, where participants threw flowers into the sea.

Cienfuegos physically disappeared on October 28, 1959, when the plane in which he was returning to Havana fell into the water. His remains were never found, hence the tradition of the Cuban people of taking flowers to the sea.

Once the liberation war began, Cienfuegos - born on February 6, 1932 in Havana - began to stand out for his conditions as one of the most relevant soldiers of the Rebel Army, in which he reached the ranks of commander.

Between mid-August and the first half of October 1958, he led an invading column that moved from the Sierra Maestra to the central part of Cuba, where he also successfully led actions.

His friendliness, jovial character, loyalty and bravery, as well as his ability to connect with the masses, earned him the popular affection and trust of Fidel Castro and the Cuban-Argentinian guerrilla fighter Ernesto Guevara, with whom he maintained a close friendship relationship.
