Colón, January 12 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez is today on a working visit to the province of Matanzas, accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the PCC.
As part of his visit to this western province, Diaz-Canel appreciated the work carried out by social centers belonging to this municipality of Matanzas province.
According to the local weekly Girón on Facebook, the president visited the mother's home, a 28-capacity facility that provides services to other localities such as Los Arabos, Perico, Calimete, Jagüey Grande and Ciénaga de Zapata.
Díaz-Canel said he would study how to improve the conditions of pregnant women in a municipality with an infant mortality rate of 1.3 per 1,000 live births, one of the lowest figures in relation to the rest of its peers in the western part of the country.
During his visit to the municipality founded on August 8, 1836, the President exchanged with the 7 children who live in the home for children without filial protection, who welcomed him with hugs and recited poems.
Before the curious eyes of the children, Díaz-Canel toured the rooms of the home and acknowledged the dedication and commitment of the 19 workers who perform care, health and teaching tasks.
He also talked with a group of neighbors who were watching from the street and discussed with them the recent increase in fuel and electricity prices, as well as the increase in salaries in the education sector.
The Cuban president began his visit by visiting the Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC) Gispert, leader among those of its kind in the province of Matanzas; and the La Esperanza farm, belonging to the UBPC itself.
Local media reported that the Cuban president was interested in the sowing, yields and varieties, as well as in the payment of workers in the unit, leader among those of its kind in the western territory.
Colón, founded on August 8, 1836 under the name of Nueva Bermeja, adopted its current name in 1855 in honor of the discoverer of America, whose figure is one of the largest statues of the admiral in the continent, located in the central park La Libertad, former Plaza de Recreo (Source: ACN).
