Cuba strengthens fisheries sector in pursuit of food sovereignty

Camagüey, Cuba, Aug. 15 (RHC) Cuba is today implementing strategies to promote food sovereignty in the municipality of Nuevitas, focusing the government's dialogue with the private sector on the Fisheries Law.

In one of the key regions for the economy of the region, the recent exchange of the Minister of Food Industry (Minal) Alberto Lopez with local fishermen was essential to improve the present and future of marine and commercial activity, according to a report by the digital portal Adelante.

Regarding the dialogue with private fishermen, the publication reports that "the minister insisted that these meetings are not only intended to clarify aspects that may still raise doubts among those who have licenses to exercise this marine activity, but also as a platform to identify problems.

Respect for the rules is crucial not only for the orderliness of fishing, but also for a better use of resources and to avoid deviations and consequences of illegality.

The productive chain is essential in the fishing production itself, therefore, since 2022, the country has authorized that the fishing activity can be carried out without state contracts, a facility for direct sales to the industry.

Although Camagüey has the Fishing Company (Pescacam), an entity that has exportable products endorsed by the Cuban Mark of Conformity, the maximum potential of the province, the integration of the private sector is key to achieve better results, exports and supply to the population.
