Cuban Women Discuss Gender Issues in Communication

Havana, Aug. 21 (RHC) Members of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) analyzed the role of the press in visualizing the realities of daily life and combating gender stereotypes.

The exchange included the presentation of studies on the subject carried out at the Academy and the experience of their application in the press organs, reported national television.

The panel, held as part of the Colloquium on Communication with a Gender Approach, in the context of the 74th anniversary of this organization, took into account the results of the studies on the Cuban Family Code presented by the National Electoral Commission.

This research identified stereotypes and prejudices present in the opinions of citizens, including traditional notions of the family, homophobic ideas, projections of daughters and sons as objectified property of their parents, and the acceptance of violence among children and adolescents.

The Center for Communicators sought to promote the use of the gender perspective not only as a tool, but also as part of professional ethics.

Participants called for the issue to be understood as transversal to all journalistic work, where a language should be used that does not ignore either men or women.
