Havana, Oct 21 (RHC) Today, the Cuban baseball community mourns the passing of Luis Zayas Travieso, the last remaining Cuban resident on the island with experience in the Cuban Professional League.

A player for the Havana and Cienfuegos teams, Zayas also made his mark in leagues in Mexico and Nicaragua, spending 12 years in the minor league circuits of American professional baseball.

After the revolutionary victory in 1959, he remained in the country to serve as a coach for several years in the National Series and as director of Isla de la Juventud and Metropolitan teams.

Zayas was a member of the renowned Cuban Sugar Kings in 1958. He averaged 2.19 with 23 RBIs, 26 runs scored, and 50 hits, including 8 doubles, 4 triples, and 3 home runs. (Source: Prensa Latina)
