U.S. Professor Highlights Cuban Scientist's Work Against Dengue

Havana, August 14 (RHC-PL) -- Cuba's scientific research on dengue was highlighted Thursday by U.S. professor Scott Halstead, who is participating in the international course on the disease in session in Havana. "Cuba is a leader in scientific research. For almost 30 years, I have been visiting Cuba many times to work in excellent studies along with its specialists", stated Dr. Halstead to Prensa Latina at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Pedro Kouri (IPK), home of the 14th International Dengue Course.

Cubans are hardworking and willing to share their experiences, and our laboratories have made good use of their collaboration and their outstanding diagnosis, said the U.S. researcher, a member of Dengue Vaccine Initiative (DVI) of the International Vaccine Institute, based in Seoul, Korea.

About 300 experts from 46 countries attending the International Dengue Course, held at IPK, with an important role in monitoring, support, diagnosis and training for fighting infectious and tropical diseases in Cuba and other nations.

The attendees discuss the most relevant and current aspects of dengue and its control at the regional and global levels. As part of the meeting, a course on Mathematical Modeling for Dengue Fever is taking place simultaneously, as well as a workshop on dengue.
